Survey: 50% of hospital patients prone to pressure sores

About half of acute-care patients are at high risk for pressure ulcers, but hospitals are not doing enough to prevent the sores, according to a survey by Hill-Rom Co.

The findings, released Thursday, follow the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) announcement last month that as of October 2008 it will no longer reimburse for hospital-acquired pressure ulcers.

Hill-Rom, which makes beds and other hospital technology, estimates that 900,000 Medicare patients a year will develop the sores.......
